POLICE OFFICER TESTING JUNE 2008

The citizens of Joplin recently demonstrated their support for the City and the department by passing a sales tax increase (5.6 million a year for additional personnel and capital needs) for public safety (including the Fire Department), with top priority given to hiring more Police Officers.

  • When turning in your application for testing, please specify which test date you will be attending next to the “POSITION APPLIED FOR” section on the application. 
  • You will only be allowed to participate in ONE of the test sessions.
  • For the physical please wear proper attire for running.

DUTIES: Patrols an assigned area of the City in a radio-equipped vehicle to preserve law and order, including checking businesses/residences and discovering/preventing the commission of crimes and enforcing State and municipal laws and ordinances; responds to calls involving automobile accidents, robberies, assaults, fights, domestic disturbances, and other criminal activities and civil complaints to secure the crime scene, identify witnesses, conduct preliminary investigations, and generally re-establish law and order at the scene.

Enforces traffic laws and ordinances by checking vehicle speed and issuing warnings and/or citations when violations are observed; prepares reports to document the facts of an incident and facilitate the apprehension, prosecution, and conviction of the perpetrator; appears in court to present evidence and sworn testimony; may serve as a certified D.A.R.E. officer, including enhancing and implementing the national curriculum for drug education for elementary students; may work with a K-9 partner. Arrests, questions, and transports suspects and/or persons with outstanding arrest warrants to City Jail facilities; ensures that arrested persons are processed (booked) into jail in accordance with State and Federal guidelines and Police Department procedures; prepares incident reports regarding all activities to facilitate preparation of prosecutable cases; answers citizen questions regarding City of Joplin Code/ordinances and State/Federal laws.

Minimum criteria for applicants to participate in departmental testing: 
  1. Minimum of 20 years of age.
  2. Possession of current Missouri P.O.S.T. certification preferred however other applicants will be considered(The City of Joplin possibly will pay for the Academy) after meeting preliminary requirements including physical, written exam, background checks and polygraph testing.
  3. No previous felony convictions or misdemeanors involving domestic violence or moral turpitude.

Applicants who currently have P.O.S.T. certification and successfully complete the written, physical performance and oral portions of the testing, which involve a preliminary background check, will be placed on a "pre-qualified" list for one calendar year.

Other applicants please refer to number (2) above. Those who successfully complete the written and physical performance and oral portions of the testing, which involve a preliminary background check, will be placed on a "pre-qualified" list for one calendar year.

As vacancies occur for Police Officers, and the applicant has attained the qualifications listed below, selected candidates will be subjected to an oral examination, a final background check, including a polygraph examination, post employment physical and a pre-employment drug screening. The City of Joplin reserves the right to remove any applicant from the eligibility list without cause.

Minimum criteria to be eligible for hire as a Police Officer:

  1. Minimum 21 years of age.
  2. Possession of current Missouri P.O.S.T. certification preferred however other applicants will be considered after meeting preliminary requirements including physical, written exam, background checks and polygraph testing.
  3. No previous felony convictions or misdemeanors involving domestic violence or moral turpitude.
  4. Possess a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  5. Successful completion of the departmental testing process, a final background and pre-employment drug screening.

Prefer two (2) years law enforcement experience and/or an Associate degree in Law Enforcement, Police Science or closely related field.

STARTING SALARY: $30,313 for those with P.O.S.T. certification and experience.
